Comboni College Robotic Club Gets a Boost with New Technology Support Centre

Comboni College has become the first secondary school in Uganda to host a Technology and Innovation Support Centre, launched by the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB). The new centre aims to empower students and local innovators by providing essential technological resources, enabling them to harness creativity, manage intellectual property, and bring their innovations to market.

The school’s Robotic Club, already known for projects like the Solar Concentrator, Non-Fuel Generator, Traffic Light, Security Alarm, and Auto Garbage Management System, sees the centre as a crucial step toward nurturing talent and fighting poverty through technology. Owiny Caesar Okello, the club’s patron, emphasized the focus on research and market connections for their innovations. He noted that Uganda’s large mobile phone user base presents a significant opportunity for the club’s solar-powered charging solutions, despite challenges such as poor internet connectivity and limited computer access.

URSB Deputy Registrar General Alex Anganya highlighted the initiative’s goal to foster creativity and innovation among secondary school learners in line with the new curriculum. He stressed that the program goes beyond developing prototypes, aiming to commercialize them to benefit both students and the community.

The initiative has received support from various leaders, including Rt. Rev. Sanctus Lino Wanok, Bishop of Lira Diocese, who called on Ugandans to embrace education and prioritize innovation. He also cautioned the government against creating a divide between science and the arts, as this could hinder holistic development.

With the establishment of the centre at Comboni College, the number of Technology and Innovation Support Centres in Uganda now stands at 35.
