Amb. Ogwang Okul Postpones His Installation as Won Nyaci Pending Court Ruling

The installation of Amb. Dickson Ogwang Okul as Won Nyaci, originally scheduled for Saturday, October 26, 2024, has been postponed. In a letter to President Museveni, Ogwang Okul, recently elected as Won Nyaci of the Lango Cultural Foundation, requested the postponement due to an ongoing legal dispute over the leadership succession.
The letter highlights the current legal battle in the High Court of Lira over the election of Eng. Michael Odongo Okune by Lango Cultural Institution.
Ogwang expressed concerns that proceeding with the installation before the court’s ruling could result in further division among the Lango people. He emphasized the need to respect the judicial process and avoid installing a Paramount Chief amid ongoing legal proceedings, warning that such actions could lead to unrest in the region.
In his letter, Ogwang called for a cautious approach to ensure a peaceful leadership transition and urged the President to postpone his planned visit to Lango for the installation until the legal matters are resolved. He also noted that this delay would provide an opportunity for a more representative and unified leadership for the Lango community.
The letter was also copied to key government officials, including the Speaker of Parliament, the Chief Justice, and the Minister of Gender, Labour, and Social Development, as well as traditional and cultural leaders across Uganda.
