Apac District has been selected to host Uganda’s first ever malaria vaccine launch in a bid to curb the high burden of the disease, especially among children.
In a letter dated March 5, 2025, addressed to the Chief Administrative Officer of Apac District, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Kenneth Akiiri, highlighted that malaria remains the leading cause of illness and death in Uganda, with the entire 41 million population at risk.
The letter further states that Uganda is the third-highest contributor to global malaria cases and ranks seventh in malaria-related deaths worldwide.
To address this crisis, the Ministry of Health will roll out the malaria vaccine for children in Apac District on April 2, 2025. Akiiri emphasized that this initiative aims to reduce malaria cases and fatalities not only in Apac but across the country.
Additionally, the campaign will serve to sensitize local communities on malaria prevention measures, as Apac has been identified as having one of the highest malaria rates among children and low immunization coverage.
According to the letter, Uganda’s Prime Minister, Robina Nabbanja, is expected to preside over the historic launch.
Speaking to our reporter, Apac District Secretary for Health, Sam Opira, confirmed receipt of the letter and stated that the district is working closely with the Ministry of Health to ensure the success of the event.
Recent Ministry of Health reports indicate that Uganda recorded 15,758,278 malaria cases and 2,793 deaths last year, underscoring the urgency of the vaccine rollout.
Health officials and stakeholders hope that this initiative will mark a significant step in the fight against malaria, particularly in high-burden districts like Apac.
