Creation of Erute District from Lira Hangs in Balance as Government Puts Move on Hold

The creation of Erute District from Lira District remains uncertain as the government suspends the move due to financial constraints.
Lira District LC5 Chairperson, Richard Cox Max Orik, has repeatedly urged local leaders to advocate for the establishment of Erute District, which would encompass all sub-counties in Erute South. These include Bar, Itek, Wiodyek, and Amac Town Council.
Orik argues that Lira City’s location between Erute North and Erute South has hindered service delivery, particularly in Erute South, where some sub-counties are over 50 kilometers from Ogur Sub-county, the proposed new location for Lira District headquarters.
Speaking at Lira District’s belated Women’s Day celebrations, Orik appealed to the Minister of Fisheries, Hellen Adoa who represented the Minister of Education and Sports to present the issue to relevant authorities for consideration. He emphasized that the creation of Erute District would boost economic growth, business opportunities, and overall livelihoods in the region.
However, in response, Adoa stated that the government had decided to halt the creation of new administrative units, including sub-counties, constituencies, and districts, due to financial challenges. She noted that the priority remains strengthening and efficiently managing existing administrative structures.
