The Paramount Chief of Lango, His Highness Eng. Dr. Moses Michael Odongo Okune, has cautioned men in Lango against domestic violence, attributing it to the increasing number of street children in the region.
Speaking to a group of women at his residence in Senior Quarters, Odongo Okune emphasized that domestic violence is a leading cause of broken homes and divorce in many families. He stressed the need for collective responsibility in addressing the issue to reduce the number of street children in Lango.
He encouraged women to take advantage of government programs such as the Parish Development Model and the Uganda Women Entrepreneurship Program (UWEP), both aimed at alleviating household poverty.
Expressing his disappointment in men, the Paramount Chief noted that many have abandoned their responsibilities, leaving women to struggle alone.
“Men are not fulfilling their role as heads of their families, which goes against Lango culture,” he stated.
Patrick Okullu Okeng, the Information Minister under the Lango Cultural Institution, emphasized that cultural leaders play a crucial role in sensitizing communities about land rights and the fight against domestic violence.
Susan Obongo, the women’s leader of the Otikokin clan, urged cultural leaders to be more engaged with the youth, particularly young women, to protect them from negative influences and immorality.
Lydia Akello, the female councillor for Junior Quarters Ward in Lira City West Division, highlighted the struggles of young women who have acquired vocational skills but lack the necessary equipment to start their own businesses.
She called on the Paramount Chief to lobby for opportunities that would empower these women to establish sustainable livelihoods.
