A speeding vehicle has claimed the life of a 6-year-old pupil from Pretoria Academy Nursery and Primary School in Oyam District.
The tragic incident occurred around 7:00 AM this morning in Adyeda, just a few meters from the school, along the Lira–Kamdini highway.
According to Robert Ekwaro, the LC3 Chairperson of Loro Town Council, the Isuzu vehicle with registration number UBH 275M was traveling from Lira towards Oyam Town when it lost control and knocked down two pupils from behind.
The deceased, a top-class pupil, was walking with her 10-year-old brother, who sustained injuries and was rushed to a nearby clinic for treatment. The girl’s body was taken to Anyeke Health Centre IV for a postmortem.
Ekwaro noted that the driver fled the scene, but bottles of beer and marijuana were discovered in the vehicle—raising suspicion that the driver may have been under the influence of alcohol.
Benson Alok, the LC1 Chairperson of Adyeda B Cell in Loro Town Council, expressed concern over the rising number of accidents along the Lira–Kamdini highway, particularly in Adyeda, which has witnessed several fatalities involving school-going children.
He attributed the frequent accidents to the absence of speed humps and called on district authorities to urgently install them, especially near schools, markets, and health facilities.
When contacted, North Kyoga Police Spokesperson Jimmy Patrick Okema confirmed receiving the report and said investigations into the incident are underway.
